THE CORNER TOWER

Presentation
The remains of the last existing circular tower date back to the early 13th century. The tower has an internal surface area of around 6m². It is built of rolled pebbles embedded in mortar. Over the centuries and up until the 1940s, the tower was used as a dwelling. It then collapsed.
In 1197, Lord Raymond de Canet, lord of Sainte Marie la Mer, obtained from King Peter II of Aragon the right to fortify the village. These fortifications follow a rectangular plan with four corner towers and a fifth in the middle of the eastern walls.
The tower was remodeled in 1412, when the inhabitants levied a tax on goods sold in the village to repair the walls and ditches.
Very few remains of the 13th-century fortifications have survived intact.
This "TORRE", along with the "Portal", is one of the last remaining witnesses to our village's medieval past.
